A SERIES of co-ordinated terror attacks – seemingly targeting Britons and Americans – left at least 78 people dead and more than 200 injured in the Indian city of Mumbai last night.
Heavily armed gunmen opened fire on the city’s crowded main railway station, as well as at hospitals, a police headquarters, luxury hotels and a restaurant popular with tourists.

Eye-witnesses caught up in the chaos in India’s financial capital said the gunmen were specifically looking for Britons and Americans. The attacks appeared aimed at foreigners, with reports claiming that westerners were being held hostage at two five-star hotels.

Last night, officials said that four suspects had been killed and nine arrested. Commandos surrounded two hotels – the Taj Mahal and the Oberoi – where it was believed armed men were holding dozens of hostages.

There were still reports of gunfire and explosions taking place elsewhere in the city late last night, and of hostages being held at a hospital.

Gunmen started opening fire around 11pm local time (5:30pm GMT) at various sites across southern Mumbai.

Vilasrao Deshmukh, the chief minister of Maharashtra state, said last night: “The situation is still not under control and we are trying to flush out any more terrorists hiding in the hotels.”

Earlier, a huge explosion rocked the landmark Taj Mahal, followed by a number of fires.

Firefighters were last night still trying to rescue people trapped by the flames. They placed ladders against the hotel to reach people seen hanging out of second-floor windows.

The exact motivation for the attacks remained unclear last night. However, Mumbai has been targeted in outrages blamed on Islamic extremists several times in recent years.

An organisation calling itself the Deccan Mujahideen claimed it was behind the attacks, local television channels reported. The relatively unknown group sent an e-mail to news organisations claiming responsibility.

The gunmen attacked the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus station in southern Mumbai and Cafe Leopold, the best-known restaurant in Mumbai, along with the Oberoi and Taj Mahal hotels. The locations are all popular with tourists.

Blood was smeared on the floor of the railway station, while Leopold’s restaurant was riddled with bullet holes.

Reports claimed that India’s anti-terrorism chief, Hemant Karkare, and two of his senior officials were killed.

Ashok Patel, a British citizen who had been staying at the Taj Mahal, said the gunmen who burst in had been deliberately targeting foreigners.

He added: “They kept shouting, ‘Who has US or UK passports?'”

Alex Chamberlain, a British sportswriter who had been dining at the Oberoi hotel, said the gunmen burst into its restaurant and herded diners upstairs. He said he believed they were looking for British and US visitors.

“They told everybody to stop and put their hands up and asked if there were any British or Americans. My friend said to me, ‘Don’t be a hero. Don’t say you are British’.

“I am sure that is what this is all about. They were talking about British and Americans specifically.”

Mr Chamberlain said he and another man managed to escape the gunmen through a fire exit and stumbled through smoke that was filling the hotel.

They reached the lobby and emerged to find fire engines and 20 armed policemen “looking as scared as we were”.

One taxi driver, Deepak Aswar, said at least 50 Koreans were trapped inside the Taj with their drivers waiting outside.

“We were just getting ready to pick them up when we heard the first blast. Police did not let us get past and they (the Koreans] are not answering the phones.”

Shivraj Patil, minister for home affairs in India, said there were about four or five attackers in each of the two hotels.

“They have attacked hotels, they have attacked the hospitals, they have attacked the railway station.”

Political reaction to the attacks was swift. Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister, promised a “vigorous” response.

He said: “I have sent a message to prime minister (Manmohan] Singh that the UK stands solidly with his government as they respond, and to offer all necessary help. Urgent action is under way to offer every possible protection to British citizens.”

US state department spokesman Robert Wood said US officials were not aware of any American casualties, but were still checking. He said he could not address reports that westerners might be among the hostages.

Barack Obama, the US president-elect, said: “These co-ordinated attacks on innocent civilians demonstrate the grave and urgent threat of terrorism.

“The United States must continue to strengthen our partnerships with India and nations around the world to root out and destroy terrorist networks.”

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said he could not give any indication of the number of Britons involved in the incident and could not comment on reports that British people were being targeted.

He said the Foreign Office was advising all British nationals to stay indoors.

India has suffered a wave of bomb attacks in recent years. Most have been blamed on Islamist militants, although police have also arrested suspected Hindu extremists thought to be behind some of the attacks.

Since October 2005, nearly 700 people have died in the bombings. And since May, a militant group calling itself the Indian Mujahideen has taken credit for a string of blasts that have killed more than 130 people.

The most recent was in September when a series of explosions struck a park and shopping areas in the capital, New Delhi, killing 21 people.

Mumbai has been hit repeatedly by terror attacks since March 1993, when Muslim underworld figures tied to Pakistani militants allegedly carried out a series of bombings on the stock exchange, trains, hotels and gas stations.

Terrorism expert Paul Wilkinson, emeritus professor of international relations at St Andrews University, said last night’s attacks were likely to have been mounted by a group linked to al-Qaeda.

“Extremist groups which share the ideology of al-Qaeda believe they must make war on western countries, as well as on the governments and authorities of all the countries they want to take control over.

“It is really in their eyes an attack on the world of unbelievers and they regard the western countries, particularly the US and its allies, as being especially attractive targets.

“But it is too early to specify a particular group as we know there have been a number in terrorist outrages recently in India. not just in Mumbai, but in Delhi and by the Kashmir border.”

PROFILE

FORMERLY known as Bombay, Mumbai was renamed in 1996 to reflect its pronunciation by speakers of Marathi, the official language of the state of Maharashtra.

The city is the country’s financial capital and, with an estimated 13 million people, is one of the most populous cities in the world.

Lying on the west coast of India, Mumbai has a deep natural harbour and its port handles more than half of India’s maritime cargo.

Mumbai is the commercial and entertainment centre of India, generating 5 per cent of India’s GDP. It accounts for 25 per cent of the country’s industrial output and 70 per cent of capital transactions to India’s economy.

Mumbai is one of the world’s top ten centres of commerce and is also home to the national stock exchange and the Bollywood film industry.

The high standard of living available, and the numerous busin
ess opportunities, attract migrants from throughout India to the city.

In July 2006, seven blasts ripped through railway stations and commuter trains in the city, killing at least 187 people.

Tory tells how he fled as gunman sprayed bullets round hotel lobby

A CONSERVATIVE MEP last night told of his terror as he was caught up in the attack on the Taj Mahal hotel in Mumbai.

Sajjad Karim

Sajjad Karim

Sajjad Karim, who was part of a trade delegation visiting the city, was barricaded in a basement room after he fled from machine-gun fire.

He said: “I was in the lobby of the hotel when gunmen came in and people started running. There were about 25 or 30 of us.

“A gunman just stood there spraying bullets around, right next to me. I managed to turn away and I ran into the hotel kitchen and then we were shunted into the basement.

“We are now in the dark in this room and we’ve barricaded all the doors. It’s really bad.”

He said that as he ran from the lobby, he saw people falling but did not know the extent of any casualties. He said it seemed to be a “random attack”.

Mr Karim, 38, was part of a delegation of MEPs visiting Mumbai ahead of a forthcoming European Union-India summit. Eight Euro MPs were believed to be in Mumbai last night, including another Tory British MEP, Syed Kamall, who represents London.

However, a Tory party spokesman said he was thought to be safe and well.

Mohammed Shafiq, the chief executive of the Muslim youth group the Ramadhan Foundation spoke to Mr Karim last night. He said: “As you can imagine, he is stunned and shaken. It sounds like the terrorists are determined to cause havoc and kill people. Nothing justifies this.”

The Taj Mahal Palace, one of the most famous hotels in India, was home to the England cricket team when they visited Mumbai about two weeks ago.

They were also planning to use the hotel on their return to the city for the second Test Match against India, scheduled to start on 19 December.

England’s media manager, Andrew Walpole, said: “We will be guided by the Foreign Office and will await developments. We need to get a clearer idea of what the situation is before we react further.”

However, Middlesex County Cricket Club has cancelled plans to fly out to take part in the forthcoming Twenty20 Champions League. The team had been due to fly to Mumbai today, and play on the opening day of the competition at the city’s Brabourne Stadium.

Mumbai, the city which never sleeps, was brought to its knees on Wednesday night as it came under an unprecedented multiple terror attack bringing areas from the South to the North of the metropolis under its grip.

As the siren blazing Toyota Qualis of the Mumbai police blazed passed, people could be seen running helter skelter, at times even crawling to save themselves from at least five near-simultaneous firings and explosions rocking areas in the vicinity of posh hotels in South Mumbai.

Even as heavily armed police stormed into Taj Hotel, just opposite Gateway of India where suspected terrorists were still holed up, blood soaked guests could be seen carried out into the waiting ambulances.

Bellboys could be seen rushing the injured out on luggage trolleys.

The scene at the nearby Trident hotel was more horrific as the glasses lay shattered on the ground even as fire could be seen raging out of the lobby.

Windshields of cars parked nearby had broken because of suspected bomb being set off at the hotel.

At the crowded Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminal (CST) railway station, hordes of mediaperson could be seen jostling for space as the area was cordoned off with no media being allowed near it even as an encounter went on inside.

Armed with AK-47 rifles and grenades, a couple of terrorists had entered the passenger hall of crowded railway station and opened fire and threw a grenade killing two to three persons on the spot.

The busy city, which is known for its nightlife, wore a deserted look as shops closed down even as police wearing bulletproof jackets could be seen frisking people in fear of terrorists taking advantage of the chaos to escape.

More than 600 people have been killed and hundreds maimed and devastated in terror strikes in India in the last six years. Following is a chronology of the major terrorist attacks in the country:

* Mumbai, Nov 26, 2008: more than 80 people killed and many more injured in seven terror attacks targetting mostly foreigners’ hangout places.

* Assam, Oct 30, 2008: At least 80 killed (figure can change) and over 100 injured in 18 terror bombings across Assam.

* Imphal, Oct 21, 2008: 17 killed in a powerful blast near Manipur Police Commando complex.

* Kanpur, Oct 14, 2008: Eight people injured after bomb planted on a rented bicycle went off Colonelganj market.

* Malegaon, Maharashtra, Sep 29, 2008: Five people died after a bomb kept in a motorbike went off in a crowded market.

* Modasa, Gujarat, Sep 29 2008: One killed and several injured after a low-intensity bomb kept on a motorcycle went off near a mosque.

* New Delhi, Sep 27, 2008: Three people killed after a crude bomb was thrown in a busy market in Mehrauli.

* New Delhi, Sep 13, 2008: 26 people killed in six blasts across the city.

* Ahmedabad, July 26, 2008: 57 people killed after 20-odd synchronised bombs went off within less than two hours.

* Bangalore, July 25, 2008: One person killed in a low-intensity bomb explosion.

* Jaipur, May 13, 2008: 68 people killed in serial bombings.

* Hyderabad, Aug 25, 2007: 42 people killed in two blasts, at a popular eatery and a public park.

* Samjhauta Express, Feb 19, 2007: 66 people killed after two firebombs went off on the India-Pakistan friendship train.

The terrorists, who created havoc in Mumbai overnight, came by boats and struck at 10 places but their number is not known immediately, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said.

Addressing a press conference in the wee hours, he said two terrorists had been killed in encounters with police and security forces and nine suspects have been detained.

The terror attacks began between 9 pm and 9.15 pm with indiscriminate firing and bomb blasts, Deshmukh said.

The terrorists came by boats and started firing, he said but their number was not immediately known.

The attackers threw grenades and fired indiscriminately while storming the hotels across Mumbai, he added.

At least two sten guns have been recovered from the terrorists, the Chief Minister said.

To a question, he said it was not immediately known as to who was involved in the attacks as the entire police force is concentrating on saving lives.

He said around 200 National Security Guard (NSG) commandos had been dispatched from Delhi for the operation to flush out terrorists.

Asked whether foreigners were the target of the attacks, the Chief Minister disagreed, saying it could not be said.

Four top police officials, including Mumbai Police Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) chief Hemant Karkare, were among the 11 policemen killed, as security forces took on terrorists in Mumbai in the early hours of Thursday, authorities said.

Two Indian Police Service (IPS) officers – additional police commissioners Ashok Kamte and Sadanand Date – were killed in separate gun battles with terrorists following a series of attacks in India’s financial capital, the officials said.

Mumbai Police “encounter specialist” Vijay Salaskar were also shot dead in another gun battle.

Karkare was heading investigations into several recent cases of terrorist attacks in Mumbai.

There were six other police officials among the at least 80 killed in the coordinated terror attacks late on Wednesday night.

The Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad’s chief Hemant Karkare was gunned down when he was leading an operation at Mumbai’s Taj Hotel against terrorists on Wednesday. He was hit by three bullets in his chest.

Karkare (54) was gunned down when he was leading an operation at Hotel Taj against terrorists who had taken 15 people, including seven foreigners, as hostages. He was hit by three bullets in his chest.

Karkare was probing the September 29 Malegaon blast case. He was an IPS officer of the 1982 batch, who had served with the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) for nine years in Austria.

He was a man known for his discipline and fair investigation.

Smritirekha Pati is still in trauma. She jumped off a moving train to escape some drunkards who found her alone in the compartment and attacked her.

Smritirekha, a researcher at Dhanbad’s mining institute, lost her left arm and sustained multiple fractures.

“All my co-passengers got down at Bankura station. The compartment got empty and I was at the door hoping some passengers will board the train, but it was a drunken man who entered and started taking liberties with me. I had no option but to jump out when he made advances at me.”

Smritirekha’s father B S Pati says the Railway Police did not even record his daughter’s statement. “Now her future has become dark. The disaster in her life must be compensated by the Railways. And the miscreant must be traced and be severely punished at any cost.”

The South Eastern Railways are yet to order an inquiry into the incident.

At least 11 Policemen killed in terror attack in mumbai. Police said they killed 5 terrorist in many places after counter attack on terrorist. Mumbai Police loose 3 top police officers like Hemant Karkare, vijay salaskar and Ashok Kamte. Some people are still hostage in Taj Hotel, Trident hotel and Cama Hospital. Army comes out from barreck and enters in Mumbai town for resque opration. Chief Ministor of Maharastra said that terrorist attacked on 11 places in mumbai. Government says 76 people were killed and around 240 is enjoured.

No comment received from R. R. Patil yet ( He said once “Goli ka Jabab Goli se diya jayega”, still undergrounded.).

Prime Minister of India Manmohan singh condemn the terrorist attack (once again after Guwahati).
200 NSG commando 5 battalian Army enters in Mumbai. All Local train, Buses are cancelled.

Now fresh firing in Taj is heared. 4-5 terrorist are still inside the Taj Hotel, Many Taj staff are killed inside Taj. More than 100 people are still hostage in Taj.

Policemen in plain clothes have been deployed in huge numbers, while the Rapid Action Force has taken charge of the situation at the Oberoi.

The fire is raging uncontrollably in certain parts of the hotel, especially on top-most floor. Shreds of glass and embers are bouncing off the burning hotel. Ambulances have been rushed to the spot and are presently on stand-by.

Its attack on Marathi asmita but still we didn’t here any thing from RAJ THACKREY (THEy can bark against only Bihari, UP Walla ha ha ha….).

Every people fears again in mumbai no one is safe here.

Gunmen have carried out a series of co-ordinated attacks across the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay), killing at least 80 people and injuring 200 more.

The situation is still confused but the city’s main train station, a hospital, a restaurant and two hotels – locations used by foreigners as well as local businessmen and leaders – are among those places caught up in the violence.

There are reports of gunfire and explosions taking place elsewhere in the city, and reports of a hostage situation at a hospital.

Is it realy terrorist attack or people celebrating the indian crecket teams winning in Cuttack. Ha ha ha Lol!!!

As captain MS Dhoni had promised, there was no dip in the intensity level after the series win and India comfortably won the fifth ODI against England by 6 wickets in Cuttack.

After a blistering start from Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar, India lost the momentum a bit as they lost three wickets in quick succession, but then Dhoni along with Suresh Raina consolidated India’s position. Dhoni (50) added 94 runs for the fourth wicket and also raised his 25th ODI fifty before Graeme Sawnn trapped him in front of the wicket. After the captain’s dismissal, Raina and Rohit Sharma saw their side home with 38 balls to spare.

England pacer Steve Harmison gave their side the first breakthrough as he dismissed Sachin Tendulkar for 50 runs. Sachin tried to play a good length delivery towards the cover but missed it and the ball crashed into the stumps. The master blaster became the first batsman to raise 90th one-day half-century. He added 136 runs for the first wicket with Sehwag. The duo had the 100-run stand for the tenth time in a row.

Yuvraj Singh was the second Indian to depart as he perished to a soft dismissal from Ravi Bopara for 6 runs. Bopara took a simple catch in his follow through to see the Punjab dasher back in the hut. Sehwag, despite his blitzing knock, missed out on his ton as Stuart Broad caught him plumb in front for 91 runs. In his 73-ball long innings, Sehwag slammed fifteen fours and a six to raise 33rd ODI fifty, his seventh against England and grabbed his second ‘Man of the match’ award of the series.

Earlier riding on their captain’s knock, England made 270 runs at the loss of four wickets. Electing to bowl first, India started off nicely as pacer Zaheer Khan struck twice to dismiss openers Alistair Cook and Ravi Bopara. Cook was first to depart, as a good length delivery that was going outside the off-stump took an outside edge of his bat and landed in the hands of Tendulkar at the first slip. He could make just 10 runs.

His opening partner Bopara survived a scare but finally perished for 24 runs. He tried to play it up but went straight to Yuvraj Singh standing at the backward point.

Kevin Pietersen (111*), who came after Cook’s departure, held the fort for his side. He first had an 89-run partnership with Paul Collingwood for the third wicket. Harbhajan broke their partnership as the latter holed out one in the deep to Zaheer Khan for 40 runs. In the next over of Ishant Sharma, new man Flintoff edged one to Sachin Tendulkar at slips without any addition to the score.

Pietersen was then joined by Owais Shah (66*) and the duo had an unbeaten partnership of 112 runs for the fifth wicket. While Pietersen raised seventh hundred, his second against India, Shah got his ninth ODI fifty. In the process, KP also completed 3000 ODI runs for England when he was on the score of 58.

India: MS Dhoni (Captain), Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Yuvraj Singh, Yusuf Pathan, Irfan Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma.

England: Kevin Pietersen (Captain), Alistair Cook, Ravi Bopara, Owais Shah, Andrew Flintoff, Paul Collingwood, Matt Prior, Samit Patel, Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann, Steve Harmison.
