The much-talked Orissa nun rape case has taken an interesting turn, as the nun, Sister Meena Lalita Barwa, who had gone into hiding and refused to cooperate with the police, broke her silence and held a press conference in New Delhi. The nun, whose face and head were covered with a scarf, sobbed before the international, national and regional TV cameras while narrating her tale of horror. The nun, Sister Meena revealed that she was raped by a rioting mob in K. Nuagaon in Kandhamal on August 25. Her press conference was held under the aegis of Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India. The nun had to come out in open after the Supreme Court rejected her demand for a CBI probe and asked her to cooperate with the state crime branch. With tears rolled down her cheeks and a choked voice, Sister Meena said, “I was raped and now I don’t want to be victimised by the Orissa Police. I want a CBI inquiry. The state police were present when I was brutally raped. They were friendly with the attackers and tried their best to prevent me from filing an FIR. I don’t have any trust in Orissa police. I want a CBI probe”, said the nun. The nun read from a prepared statement at the press conference held at the Indian Social Institute on Lodhi Road in Delhi. During the 15-minute press conference, she narrated her traumatic experience in details, but did not take any questions. She also said that the rape occurred in the presence of over a dozen policemen. According to her version, she was raped, paraded naked and then handed over to the Block Development Officer, who took her to K. Nuagaon police outpost. Later, when she and Father Chellan tried to file an FIR, they were discouraged by the IIC, Baliguda Police Station. She also had to undergo a medical examination around 10 in the night. The nun confirmed that the mob also misbehaved and beat up Father Thomas Chellantharayil alias Father Chellan, who was with her. She demanded an immediate CBI probe and maintained that she does not want to cooperate with the state police, as she has lost trust in them.

Students in Bihar went on a rampage during today’s Bihar Bandh. Thousands of students turned violent and tried to vandalize the Patna University. The police had to resort to lathicharge to disperse the mob. The mob also set Sheikhpura Railway Station on fire and disrupted train services across Bihar. At least 150 students have been arrested so far. The Bihar Bandh has been called by student unions in Bihar.

A group of miscreants belonging to Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) ransacked the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) office in Nasik, protesting against the former ABVP member Pragyan (Pragnya) Singh in the Malegaon blast. The NCP goons shouted anti-ABVP slogans and attacked the ABVP office in Ashok Stambh locality in Nasik. The miscreants damaged the furniture and the board of VHP. They reportedly blackened the face of some ABVP members present in the office. Later, VHP and ABVP workers took to the streets in protest against the attack on ABVP office. Situation is tense, but under control in Nasik.

The Mumbai ATS confirmed that only a fringe Hindu group headed by Sadhvi Pragnya (Pragyan) Singh Chandrapal Singh Thakur (38) is involved in the Malegaon bomb blast. Pragnya Singh Thakur, known as Sadhvi Purnachetnagiri has taken ‘Sanyas’ in January 2007 and reportedly formed a group of fundamentalists to avenge the bomb blasts conducted by Islamic terror groups. Sadhvi Pragnya had joined ABVP in 1993. However, she later became a fierce leader, advocating Hindu Nationalism. Sadhvi Pragnya was the head of Madhya Pradesh ABVP Unit in 2002. She was seen campaigning for the BJP in Gujarat in 2002 and 2007 elections. Pragnya also shared the stage with Gujarat CM Narendra Modi during an election campaign. She denounced the material life and took ‘Sanyas’ in January 2007. The BJP, Bajrang Dal and ABVP now deny any link with Pragnya for a long time. According to sources, Pragnya was a fighter since her childhood. If we believe her father, who gave an interview to Star News TV Channel, Pragnya always fought injustice and never tolerated anti-social activities. According to her father Chandrapal Singh, Pragnya and her sister once beat up a group of goons from Congress party when they dared to take on the sisters. Pragnya and her sister reportedly beat up those goons to such an extent that they begged for mercy before these strong girls. Sadhvi Pragnya has been a tomboy since her childhood. The Mumbai Police believe that Pragnya had a mission of carrying out bomb blasts across the country to avenge the bomb blasts conducted by Islamic terror groups. She had hatred in her mind and followed religious fanaticism. Although she was a former member of ABVP and Hindu Jagran Manch, she had formed her own network and pursued the mission secretly. It’s surprising that she chose her own bike to carry out the blast. According to Mumbai ATS, two Army officers detained in Pune, helped her to bring RDX from Kanpur. More arrests are likely in this case, as the ATS has reached Bhopal to proceed with their probe. The ATS sources claim that they have a 400 minutes tape between Sadhvi Pragnya and her associates. The tape was compiled after analyzing Pragnya’s mobile call details. More skeletons will tumble, as the probe progresses. Meanwhile, BJP and ABVP have distanced themselves from Sadhvi Pragnya, saying she was a former member of ABVP and had no recent links with the organization. However, Sadhvi Uma Bharti and Sadhvi Ritambara have come out in support of Sadhvi Pragnya and termed the latest development as a pre-planned conspiracy to frame Hindu groups. Hundreds of people took out a procession in Jabalpur in support of Sadhvi Pragnya. They burnt the effigy of Maharashtra government for allegedly framing Sadhvi Pragnya.

Wipro has slumped 16.7% to Rs 196. Tata Power has tumbled nearly 14% to Rs 539. DLF has crashed 11% to Rs 181. SBI and Hindustan Unilever have plunged over 10% each to Rs 1,037 and Rs 202, respectively. TCS and NTPC have shed 9.5% each at Rs 443 and Rs 118, respectively. Tata Steel has dropped 9% to Rs 162. ONGC and Reliance Communications have slipped 7.8% each to Rs 608 and Rs 178, respectively. Ranbaxy has declined 7.5% to Rs 175. HDFC Bank and Grasim are down 6.8% each at Rs 906 and Rs 982, respectively. Mahindra & Mahindra, however, has rebounded into the positive zone and is now up 1.6% at Rs 292.

Bus Hijacked in Mumbai An unidentified gunman was killed on Monday by Mumbai Police in a state transport bus after he was suspected of trying to take the passengers hostage in suburban Kurla. The incident occurred around 0930 hours inside a BEST bus in the city’s northeast suburb of Kurla, they said. “The man fired at the police in ‘Bail’ bazar area of Kurla and was shot in retaliatory fire,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Rakesh Maria said. The police suspect that the gunman was trying to take the bus passengers hostage and ‘this is being verified’. He was pronounced dead at the Rajawadi hospital in Ghatkopar, police said but did not release details about him. A passenger, who also sustained injuries in the incident, has been taken to the same hospital, where his condition is reported to be critical.

Terrorist group MNS Chief Raj Thackeray has been sent to judicial custody till November 4. Raj Thackeray’s bail plea was rejected by the Bandra Court. Although Raj got the bail in the Chetna College violence in Kherwadi after producing a bail bond of Rs. 15,000, he was denied the same in the Kalyan violence case. Raj was taken into custody by the Kalyan police. Since the Mumbai Police did not demand Raj’s custody, he was sent to judicial custody by the court. Raj Thackeray was charged with provoking violence under Section 153. He was also charged for “creating mischief”, “intent to cause riots” and “causing damage to property”. The court’s decision came as a major setback for Raj Thackeray and his supporters who expected Raj to be released on bail. Security has been beefed up in and around Mumbai, as the police anticipate more trouble after the rejection of Raj Thackeray’s bail plea.

Even before Raj Thackeray was produced in the Bandra court in Mumbai, over 2,000 slogan-raising supporters had gathered there, and the police resorted to a lathi-charge to bring the situation under control around Tuesday noon. MNS supporters resorted to stone-pelting at police vehicles outside the Bandra court. The supporters also stoned a police van carrying detained MNS activists. Reports from across Mumbai spoke of voluntary bandh at many places, and many schools shut down for the day anticipating trouble. Local trains reported a slight delay, while there was no disruption in road traffic on the main arteries. Violence erupted in several parts of Mumbai and Maharashtra following the arrest of MNS chief Raj Thackeray in the early hours of Tuesday from the Circuit House in Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra. Angry activists of the MNS came out on the streets after the arrest of Raj Thackeray and attacked several taxis and autorickshaws at Mumbai Central, Parel, Borivali and other parts of the city. Incidents of arson were also reported from the Mulund check naka in the eastern suburbs. A mob of party workers have also blocked the Mumbai-Goa highway. The police said security has been beefed up across Mumbai to meet any eventuality in the wake of the arrest of Raj Thackeray. The State Reserve Police has also been deployed near Raj Thackeray’s residence in Dadar. Raj Thackeray was arrested under several Indian Penal Code sections, including assault, obstructing government officials from discharging their duty and giving provocating speeches. Raj Thackeray was arrested for Sunday’s brutal attack on north Indian railway exam candidates by MNS workers. A case was registered in this connection against Raj Thackeray and his supporters at the north-west Mumbai police station of Kherwadi, after MNS workers attacked 13 railway board examination centres in suburban Mumbai to protest against “inadequate representation” to locals. The arrest of the MNS chief comes against the backdrop of mounting pressure on the Maharashtra government to rein in Raj Thackeray and his activists. Earlier, a combative Raj Thackeray had justified Sunday’s attack on north Indians and warned the state that it will have to “regret” the consequences in the event of his arrest. “Arrest me and be ready to bear the consequences…. You will have to regret,” Raj Thackeray, who was attending a ceremony at Bahadursheikh Naka in Chiplun in the state on Monday, said. “If Raj is arrested, entire Maharashtra will be set on fire,” he threatened. Meanwhile, incidents of violence were reported across Mumbai allegedly by the MNS activists. Taxis parked at Tardeo in south Mumbai were damaged by some unknown miscreants who fled on motorcycles, the police said. Two separate incidents were reported in the north-west suburb of Borivali where miscreants attempted to burn trucks, they added. There were also reports of some unidentified men throwing stones at the suburban resident of Congress spokesperson Sanjay Nirupam. Meanwhile, schools in suburban Mumbai have been closed as a preventive measure following the arrest of MNS chief. Bsides, security has been beefed up in Mumbai to thwart any untoward incident, the police said. Reacting sharply to his leader’s arrest, MNS spokesperson Shirish Parkar said, “There was no substance in the allegations against Raj Thackeray. The state government was acting at the behest of the Centre.” Parkar described the arrest of Raj Thackeray as “vengeance” and political “conspiracy” by the Maharashtra government.

Railway Minister Lalu Prasad today demanded “stringent action” against Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray , saying that arrest is not enough to deter him from spreading his campaign against north Indians. “Raj Thackeray is repeatedly organising attacks on North Indians. So by just arresting him is not enough and more stringent action should be taken against him,” Prasad told reporters one the sidelines of a railway seminar. Terming Thackeray as the leader of antisocial elements, Prasad said he is spreading “hatred and divisive campaign” against north Indians which is not good for a secular democracy. “Even Dalits were not spared and attacked by his men,” he added. Clubbing MNS with the Bajrang Dal, the Rashtriya Janata Dal chief reiterated his demand for banning both the organisations. “Like the Bajrang Dal, Thackeray’s party is also spearheading a hatred campaign and both should be banned,” he said. Prasad announced that those students who could not appear in the railway examination due to the disruption created by the MNS, would be allowed to appear again. A date for re-examination would be announced soon, said Prasad. Lok Janshakti Party chief Ram Vilas Paswan and Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh felt that Thackeray could be out on bail soon and non-Maharashtrians could be targeted again. Congress MP Priya Dutt said by arresting only Thackeray, attacks on north Indians could not be stopped. Paswan, Union minister for steel, chemicals and fertilisers, said, “Thackeray will be out on bail soon and again indulge in violent activities. The Centre should take steps like use of Article 355 or something similar to control the situation in Maharashtra.. The prevailing situation in the state was “dangerous” and the administration has “failed” to do anything, he said. SP general secretary Amar Singh described Thackeray’s arrest as a “reactionary” step by the Maharashtra government. “Raj Thackeray’s arrest by Mumbai police was a reactionary step and by afternoon he would be released, and no action will be taken against him,” he said. Accusing state Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil of playing the “divide and rule” game, Singh said they will never benefit from it. “The state government is playing the divide and rule game even as Raj Thackeray and his goons have been on a rampage. He will be released from custody by afternoon and his men will again start attacking north Indians,” Singh said. He said Maharashtra is an integral part of the country and Maharashtrians are loved by everybody but now everybody hates Maharashtrians, just like people from other parts of the country. “Even President Pratibha Patil is from Maharashtra, and still this (attack on north Indians) is happening in the state,” he said. Congress MP Dutt, while reacting to the news of the MNS chief’s arrest, felt that despite this step, attacks on non-Maharastrians will not stop. “This is ongoing…such attacks will not stop. Today, north Indians are being targeted, tomorrow people from other regions could be attacked. Such types of incidents should not be allowed to take place, and leaders cutting across party lines have condemned such incidents.”

Mr. Panda had reportedly admitted that Maoist groups in Orissa always received support from Christian groups. “It is a fact that Christians form the majority in our organisation. Our supporters in Rayagada, Gajapati and Kandhamal also belonged to the Christian community,” said Sabyasachi Panda during his interview to some correspondents in a recent interview. Laxmanananda Saraswati was killed, as he did not stop his movements against religious conversion and cow slaughter.

BSE Sensex crashes, falls below 12,000-mark The BSE Sensex crashed by over 500 points to fall below 12,000, a two-year-low for the premier stock exchange of India. There is a bloodbath on Dalal Street with major companies such as Tata Power and Sterlite suffering huge loses in the market meltdown. Even though the US House approved the $700 bailout package, it failed to revive the market mood. The Nifty too suffered a loss of over 165 points till 1 PM.

UPA Allies seek ban on Bajrang Dal Even as the Prime Minister has called a meeting of National Integration Council (NIC) on October 13 to discuss the communal violence in Kandhamal and Karnataka, UPA allies have demanded a complete ban on Bajrang Dal and its activities in the country. The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) has already recommended a ban on Bajrang Dal in the wake of attacks on Christians in Kandhamal, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh. Kandhamal has been an eye of the storm, as violence continued there for more than a month. At least 35 people were killed in communal clashes, over 1000 houses were burnt, a nun and a Hindu girl were raped. Over 30,000 people were forced to take shelter in forests and later in relief camps. The communal violence was triggered by the killing of senior VHP leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati at Jalespata Ashram in Kandhamal. US House backs India nuclear deal

The deal would give India access to US civilian nuclear technology The US House of Representatives has voted in favour of a landmark nuclear deal between India and the US. The agreement now goes to the Senate for final approval, before President George W Bush signs it into law. India PM Manmohan Singh, who was in New York for the UN General Assembly, has said India is close to securing a “new status” in the world nuclear order. India says the agreement is vital for it to meet its energy demands. Critics say it creates a dangerous precedent. They say the deal allows India to expand its nuclear power industry without requiring it to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) as other nations must. Under its terms, India would get access to US civilian nuclear technology and fuel. In return, Delhi would open its civilian nuclear facilities to inspection – but its nuclear weapons sites would remain off-limits. Race against time The House passed by the agreement 298-117 votes. Reports say it is likely to go for a final approval to the Senate this week. “I am happy that one hurdle has been crossed, but it is not the end of the Congressional process and we need to wait for the final outcome,” Manmohan Singh told reporters. US President George W Bush urged the Senate to “quickly” vote on the deal before it adjourns before October. “Signing this bipartisan bill will help strengthen our partnership with India,” he said in a statement. The US restricted nuclear co-operation with India after it tested a nuclear weapon in 1974. “India will be liberated from the constraints of technology denial of 34 years,” Mr Singh was quoted as saying in a statement issued by his office. “The civilian nuclear cooperation is in the interest of India, in the interest of the US and in the interest of the world at large,” he said. Correspondents say it will be a race against time if the two sides sign the deal – first agreed three years ago – and regarded as a key foreign policy priority for both the Indian and US governments. Earlier this month, the Nuclear Suppliers Group lifted a ban that had stopped India from getting access to the global nuclear market.

Filmstar Saif Ali Khan finds himself in deep trouble after the General Railway Police of Punjab filed an assault case against him and two others in Patiala. Saif and his security guards allegedly beat up the photojournalist Pawan Sharma, when he tried to click the photographs of the actor, who was on a shooting. Saif’s security guards not only beat up the photojournalist, but also took away his camera. The incident sparked off protests in Patiala and other parts of the state, as mediapersons demanded immediate action against Saif Ali Khan and his security guards. The journalists later withdrew their stir, after getting assurance from government representatives. A case has been registered against Saif and two line directors. Saif is likely to be arrested today.

Terror returns to Ahmedabad, as 17 crude bombs found in dustbins in Ahmedabad this morning. The bomb disposal squad defused the bombs immediately. The bombs were recovered from Kalupur Darwaza. Panic has gripped the city, as nine-day-long Navaratri Festival will begin tomorrow in Gujarat. Any such developments during the festival, may lead to a communal flare-up. The Gujarat police have been put on high alert in the wake of recovery of crude bombs in Ahmedabad. Metal detectors have been installed at all entry gates of all Navaratri functions. Security has been beefed up in all sensitive places in the state.

In a shocking development, a German tourist in Chandigarh alleged that she was kidnapped from Hotel Taj Palace on Saturday night and was molested by a group of people. The incident occurred in Sector-17, Chandigarh. The 20-year-old German lady had come to Chandigarh to attend a friend’s marriage. The police have registered a case against unknown persons and the lady has been taken to hospital for medical test.

Our Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh made a sensational statement when he met US President George W. Bush at the White House. Dr. Singh said that Indians loved George Bush deeply. The world was stunned at this statement. Everyone knows that George Bush do not even enjoy the support of 25% American because of failed policies and stubborn attitude. In India, Bush is seen as a villain because of his hegemonistic attitude and attack on Iraq without a proper reason. But our PM believes otherwise. It is not known how many leaders from his own Congress Party support his view. Whatever, the statement made by our PM made us a laughing stock before the world. Faridabad has been put on high alert after a bomb scare in Sector-15 market in the city. An anonymous SMS sent to Faridabad Police this morning warned of a bomb blast in Sector-15 market, Faridabad. The SMS dared the police and administration to prevent the bomb blast if they can. The Sector-15 market has been evacuated with immediate effect. Security personnel and bomb disposal squad have been rushed to the spot. Although there is substantial evidence to prove the validity of the SMS, the Faridabad police do not want take any chance. Latest reports suggest that it was a hoax SMS and police have arrested two Engineering students who allegedly sent the threat SMS.

The “Devil’s Advocate” program on CNN-IBN tonight will feature Archbishop of Delhi, Vincent M Concessao. Vincent is also the President of National United Christian Forum. Karan Thappar will grill the Archbishop on the issue of conversion and communal violence. The program will be shown at 8.30 PM on Sunday, September 28. According to CNN-IBN, Archbishop Vincent M Concessao has demanded a ban on Bajrang Dal and VHP and also accused BJP of colluding with them. He also held Naveen Patnaik government in Orissa responsible for the attacks on Christians and Churches. The Archbishop denounced the concept of “Hindutva” and said “Hindutva has its ideology from the West, from Hitler and Nazism. It has no roots in India, not in Hinduism.” When Karan Thappar further asked the Archbishop if in the interest of India’s integrity and unity, the Church could agree on a moratorium on conversion for 10-15 years, the Archbishop said that would deny freedom to people to exercise their right to convert. He also denied any association with “Satyadarshini”, which distributed literature denouncing and ridiculing Hindu Gods. After getting a thumbs up from the US House of Representatives on the Indo-US Nuclear deal, a jubilant Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh arrived in France on a three-day state visit. Dr. Manmohan Singh will participate in the ninth India-EU summit in Marseilles on Monday. Dr. Manmohan Singh’s visit to France is aimed at bringing India closer to European Union and sign a nuclear agreement with France. French President Nicolas Sarkozy will host a lunch in honour of Dr. Singh. Nicolas Sarkozy and Dr. Manmohan Singh will discuss several bilateral issues including civil nuclear cooperation, defence, space, and business.

After the Armed Forces expressed huge disappointment over the Sixth Pay Commission report and rejected it outright, the PMO intervened and formed a 3-member committee to look into their grievances. After consulting with the PM, who is away on a foreign visit, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee formed a committee with two other members Finance Minister P Chidambaram and Defence Minister A K Antony. Mr. Pranab Mukherjee will head the committee. The committee will look into objections raised by armed forces over the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations. Defence Minister AK Antony expressed hope that armed forces will get their pay in new scales by Diwali. He also assured that all anomalies in the pay will be duly addressed. The Defence Services have decided to accept the revised pay scales and submit the salary bills to the ministry until the committee submits its report the cabinet. President Dr. Pratibha Patil took note of the concerns of the armed forces and gave her sanction to the order for ad-hoc payment of arrears, which will help the defence personnel to manage their Diwali expenses.

The US House of Representatives approved the Indo-US nuclear deal, giving a much needed breather to Indian PM Dr. Manmohan Singh and US President George W. Bush. The US House passed the bill by a vote of 298-117. While the House Republicans voted 178-10, the Democrats voted 120-107. It could be recalled that Democrats control the US Senate. PM Dr. Manmohan Singh thanked US President George Bush. The bill will now go to the US Senate within a few days. It is expected to get the green signal from the Senate although the mandate is likely to be a split one.

Veteran singer Mahendra Kapoor died in Mumbai. He was 74. Mahendra Kapoor has been regarded at par with Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh, Manna De and Kishore Kumar. He had a unique voice, which could not be copied by anyone. Mahendra Kapoor was inspired by Mohammed Rafi. Some of the super hit films where he lent his voice were Dhool Ka Phool, Gumrah, Waqt, Hamraaz, Upkaar, Purab Aur Paschim etc. He also received National Fim Award for ‘Upkar’ in 1968. Mahendra Kapoor’s famous songs Neele Gagan Ke Tale (Hamraaz), Chalo Ek Baar Chalo (Gumrah), Kisi Pathar Ki Moorat Se (Hamraaz), Lakhon Hain Yahan Dilwale (Kismat), Mere Desh Ki Dharti (Upkar), Bharat Ka Rahnewala Hoon (Purab Aur Pascchim), Mera Pyar Woh Hai (Yeh Raat Phir Na Aayegi) still bewitch the audience whenever they are being played.
